Ingredients

  • 10 to 12 lemons
  • 1 L alcohol (high proof grain alcohol)
  • 500 gram sugar
  • 1 L water

Instructions

  • Take the peels of 10 to 12 lemons (try not to get too much pith, you want just the peel) and macerate in 1L of alcohol for a few weeks. Drain and set aside.
  • Make a simple syrup by boiling 500g of sugar to every 1L of water. Once the water is simmering and the sugar is all dissolved, remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature.
  • Combine equal parts lemon alcohol with the simple syrup. Bottle and store in and airtight bottle (otherwise the alcohol will evaporate leaving you with nasty lemon sugar).  If you like yours a little sweeter, just add more sugar when making the simple syrup.

You might think growing up in a small town in Texas wouldn't prepare you to live the Italian lifestyle. But in many ways — the family values, the small town culture, the love of food — is very similar to what you'll find in Italian culture. In fact, I expect it's pretty universal. Having been married to an Italian for 20 years, it's been fun to learn and explore the rich Italian culture and share it with you.
